Violet Jones

September 14, 1912 — November 15, 2014

Fountain City, WI
Violet Elizabeth Jones, 102, of Fountain City passed away peacefully at St. Michael's Assisted Living in Fountain City, WI.
She was born September 14, 1912 to Claude Douglas and Anna Florence (Koschetz) Gillette in Fountain City, WI. Anna Gillette, (Violet's mother) was born in Fountain City and played the piano very well. She knew Buffalo Bill Cody and Sitting Bull as a very young girl and told the grand kids great tales about those times.
Claude Gillette was born in Genoa, WI. He was supervisor in charge of construction of several locks or dams along the Mississippi River and poured the first bucket of cement on the Santee Cooper Dam in South Carolina.
Violet went to many different schools as her father moved from one construction job to another.
Violet went into the Armed Services when she was almost 30 years old. She served as an Army Master Sergeant at the Pentagon during WWII. She was in charge of 165 girls in New York. She was in the service 2 years, 8 months, and twenty eight days. It was in the Military where she met her husband, Herbert. He was from Bigfoot, Texas. He was called to duty on their wedding night. So much for a honeymoon! After their military service was over, they moved to San Antonio, TX, where Herbert owned a barber shop. Violet was very busy at this time because they had a baby boy named Raymond Charles "Ray". He had a case of sever Muscular Dystrophy, starting at the age of two. Ray lived until age 20, living much longer than expected. Ray's mother and father took him to see many places of interest in the U.S.A. He lived as full a life as he could, considering his disability.
Violet lived in Texas for 40 years. Her husband and son had died and now it was time to take care of her mother. Violet's brother "Buster" and wife Candace helped Violet's move to Arcadia. Now Violet could visit her mother (Anna), who was in St. Michael's Nursing Home in Fountain City. Anna lived to be 111.
Violet continued to live in her apartment in Arcadia. In May of 2010, she received the honor of being selected to go on the Freedom Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. It would take her to the nation's capitol to see the WWII memorials there. "It was wonderful", she said. " I wish more women would go... there were only two of us on it."When Violet was no longer able to care for herself, she went to St. Joseph's Nursing Home. When the nursing home closed, she moved to St. Michael's Assisted Living in Fountain City. It was the same home her mother lived until her death.
Violet will always be remembered for her faith in God as a practicing Catholic, sense of humor and her joy for life. She had a wonderful ‘giggle' and twinkle in her eyes.
Violet is survived by nieces and nephews; Melody, Richard, Douglas, Gloria, Linda, James, JoNell, Kay, and Candace.
Violet was preceded in death by brothers; Roman A. Gillette, a Major in the Army during WWII; Claude Sidney Gillette "Buddy" a Sgt. Killed in action in Korea; James Douglas Gillette "Buster", an Air Force Veteran of WWII. She had a sister, Zola May Gillette Bessinger a Tech Sgt. In the Army during WWII. A son, Raymond Charles, died at age 20 from Muscular Dystrophy.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Violet's caregivers at her apartment, St. Joseph's Nursing Home, St. Michael's Assisted Living, and Special caregivers; Sr. Rosemary Rombalski, Pat Dolan, Gloria Prosser, and Sue Konert. Violet, we will remember you, and until we meet again, may He hold you in the palm of His hand.
