Martin Matchey

May 17, 1940 — September 28, 2018

Martin (Marty) Matchey-beloved husband, father, and grandfather-died peacefully at home on Friday, September 28, 2018. He is survived by his wife Joan, daughters Kristi Obmascher, Karyn Matchey, and Mari Jo Ulrich, grandson Quinn Grovesteen Matchey, and son-in-law Jeff Ulrich. He was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Ella Matchey, in-laws Carl and Marian Nelson, and son-in-law Mike Obmascher.

Marty was born in Independence, Wisconsin on May 17, 1940. He attended S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic School, graduated from Independence High School in 1958, and attended La Crosse State for one year. He married Joan Nelson on November 28, 1959. They lived in Whitehall and moved to Blair in 1969 when they purchased a grocery business. They owned and operated Marty's IGA for 13 years. Subsequently, Marty spent 27 years with Festival Foods in Onalaska.

Marty loved sports at all levels. He played high school, city league, and charity basketball. High school sports were a large part of his life. He attended games both home and away. Marty and Joan were avid fans of the WIAA Boys State Basketball Tournament and attended for the past 45 years. Marty's love for sports led him to be known as Blair High School's "Frantic Fan." He loved the Badgers, Packers, and Chicago Cubs. Marty and Joan made it a priority to watch Quinn play sports. Marty also enjoyed fishing and the yearly family vacation.

Marty was active in his community, serving on the Blair Chamber of Commerce; City Council; Lions Club, including serving as Deputy District Governor; and Polish Drill Team. Marty was awarded the 1981 Blair Civic Award. Marty taught catechism classes and was a member of the Trempealeau County Arc. Marty enjoyed playing Santa in the community, including at the Rotary Lights in La Crosse.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Fagernes Lutheran Church, W19727 County Rd N in rural Blair, with a luncheon following. Visitation will begin at 10 am. The Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, is assisting the family with arrangements
