Maria Slaby Benson
Maria Slaby Benson of Arcadia, WI passed away on Monday August 11, 2014, at Franciscan Skemp Mayo Clinic Healthcare System LaCrosse. Maria was born on May 29, 1923, in Czernowitz-Romania. She fled to Austria with her parents in 1940 after Czernowitz was occupied by Russian Communists. In 1950-1954 she worked as an interpreter at a US Army Military base in Salzburg, Austria. There she met Marcel M. Slaby while he was stationed in Linz, Austria. They married in 1954 and moved to the United States in 1957. Marcel passed away May 27, 1963. She re-married to Everett Benson, Mabel Minnesota in 1973.
Maria worked at Arcadia Furniture Industries and Ashley Furniture in Arcadia prior to her retirement in 1983. Maria was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Holy Family Catholic Parish.
Maria's greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Maria was preceded in death by her husband-Marcel Slaby, husband-Everett Benson, mother- Antonia Siwicki, father- John Siwicki, and her siblings Stanislaw Siwicki, Anna Zavoianu, Jozef Siwicki, Olga Capec, and Nickolaus Siwicki.
Maria is survived by her children, Barbara Burleson-Krambeer- Postville Iowa, John B. Slaby- Japan, and Debra Slaby - Arcadia, grand-children-Bridget Breska-Arcadia, Adam Kupietz-Burlington WI, Nicholas Kupietz- LaCrosse, WI, Kristen Lindow-Onalaska,WI, Johnna Slaby, Reylia Slaby, Millie Slaby, Betsie Slaby, Tessa Slaby and 15 great grandchildren, Briana, Bret, Nathan, William, Quincy, Caspian, Sunyana, Jocelyn, Drew, Hallie, Kaden, Liam, Maria, Lilly and Thomas.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 15, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Parish in Arcadia with Rev. Woodrow Pace officiating. Friends may call on Thursday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Wozney-Killian Funeral Home where there will be a 7:30 PM rosary. They may also call on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Independence, WI.
