James Schmidtknecht

January 18, 1945 — September 8, 2013

James David Schmidtknecht 68 of Alma, (Cream) WI passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2013, at St. Michael's Assisted Living, Fountain City, WI, after a 6 year courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on January 18, 1945, to Elden and Leona (Wojchik) Schmidtknecht in Waumandee, WI.
He attended St. Boniface Catholic School in Waumandee, WI, graduated from Arcadia High School in 1963, and attended UW-River Falls.
Jim farmed with his brothers for a short time on the Schmidtknecht home farm in Waumandee, WI, until 1968; then purchased his own farm in Cream known as the Schmidty Holstein Farm. Jim's pride and joy was his dairy herd and his farm for deer hunting. Jim served on the Buffalo County Dairy Promotion Committee as President over 25 years and was currently serving as Vice-President. He was a member of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association, Registered Holsteins, Farm Bureau, Tri-State Breeders, and the Land Conservation Program. He served on the State Holstein, Garden Valley Cooperative, Farm Bureau boards and was a member of St. Boniface Parish where he served on the Parish Council and ushered.
In the 80's Jim was the Town of Lincoln assessor for over 10 years and Town of Lincoln chairman for another 15 years.
Along with his brother-in-law, Tony, Jim held the Wisconsin State Bowling Doubles title for many years. He sponsored the Hanson Race Car #5 for 8 years.
Jim was an avid Green Bay Packer and Milwaukee Brewers fan and enjoyed bowling, skiing, biking, and especially enjoyed having bow and gun deer hunters come to his farm.
Jim was a one man farmer, but was always willing to give of what little time he had left of the day to support the dairy farmer, church, and community.
Jim is survived by brothers: Robert (Lorraine) Schmidtknecht of Arcadia and Bernard (Mary) Schmidtknecht of Mondovi; sisters: Mary (LaVern) Skroch of Trempealeau, Janet (Roger) Amundson of Trempealeau, and Joan (David) King of Vacaville, CA; brother-in-law: Tony Pronschinske; 29 nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews who thought the world of "Uncle Jim". He was preceded in death by his parents, Elden and Leona Schmiddtknecht; sisters: Clarice Pronschinske and Marlene Matchey; brother-in-law Randy Matchey; nephews: Gregory Schmidtknecht and Dan Burt.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 13, 2013, at 11:00 AM at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Rev. Brian Jasdzewski officiating. Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at St. Boniface Catholic Church where there will be a 7:00 PM prayer service and a 7:30 PM rosary. They may also call on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of services at the Church. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery.
