Mary Lou Fernholz, 85, of Winona and formerly of Arcadia died on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at Winona Health with her family by her side. Mary Lou was born on June 21, 1932, in Waumandee, WI to Frank and Cecelia (Kreye) Reuter. She graduated from Arcadia High School and attended St. Teresa's and Winona State University, receiving her bachelor's degree in education.
Mary Lou married Cleon "Choker" Ferhnolz on October 1, 1955, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waumandee, WI. She taught 5th grade at the Arcadia Catholic School from 1969 to 1995, and was a member of Holy Family Parish and the P.C.C.W. Mary Lou enjoyed quilting, crocheting, knitting, playing piano and in her earlier years bowling. She spent her summers camping with her family at Merrick Park in Fountain City.
Mary Lou always had a smile on her face with an infectious laugh. She touched many lives through her teaching, and her former students often stopped to thank her for her positive influence in their lives.
Mary Lou is survived by her 3 daughters: Nancy (Mike) Cole of Naperville, IL, Barbara (Brian) Masyga of Winona, Susan (Steven) Scharlau of Fountain City; 8 grandchildren: Kristina and Laura Cole, Nicholas, Matthew, and Scott Masyga, M. Paul, Bradley, and Karen Scharlau; 2 sisters: Phyllis Kostner of Holmen, Dorothy Weber of Chippewa Falls; and 1 brother: Francis (Joyce) Reuter of Eau Galle, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents: Frank and Cecelia Reuter, husband: Cleon "Choker" Ferhnolz, son: Michael ‘Mick" Fernholz, sisters: Ruth Benusa, Janice Morrison and brother: Tommy Reuter.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Parish in Arcadia with Rev. Sebastian Kolodziejczek officiating. Friends and family may call from 9:00 AM until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, rural Arcadia. Memorials may be directed to the Arcadia Catholic School.
